Andy,
one thing that concerns me is that you are only showing 5 minutes of each film,
i think that is stabbing the project in the foot a little bit,
wouldnt it be better to take what you have now, and expand the time frames on that and beef up the CD with extra info about there productions, crew and cast etc ?
I would like to see this work, and i hope it does but its that old time saying "Quality not Quanity"
I dont know what everyone else thinks who has submitted so far, but do you think it would be better to go for the quality , having your film at full length and lots of info about your films on the CD ?
next question is then out of those who have submitted who would be prepared to put in the extra info etc ?
remember there can always be a Volume 2,

Hi all,
N. Tyler, hi, if you need more information
than on the web site, (hmm, which still
seems to be down), then send me a mail
with your questions.
Basically, to recap (and to answer chance1234),
the idea was to have a CD with about 10+
people's work on it to be an active
promotional platform. Then each of the
10+ people try to promote the CD in any
way they want, like giving away, telling
their local press, etc. Thus, this
'project' gives people something to focus
on when talking about publicity and will
give publicity to everyone on the CD.
Using the web idea of working together to
get to a common goal, i.e. getting our
videos out there.
--
Now about the space on the CD. I think
with 10+ people that gives a good chance
of getting this known. If we give more
space to people on the CD this will mean
less people can be involved. Combined,
with the fact that average person watching
the CD might not want to watch the whole
60 minutes of video. Let's say they watch
the first minute of each video before they
get bored. (Sorry, but it might happen:-)
With fewer videos they will watch less,
the more videos on the disk the more the
chance that more people will watch more of
the disk. (and tell others, snowball
effect, etc)
I have thought about this for a while and
this is what I came up with. In the
future (note future) we might be doing
this same thing on DVD where there'll be
more space. But for now, I think the
more people we have joining this venture
the more chance we have of it taking off.
However, saying that, html text takes up
very little space on the CD compared with
MPEG1, so I am not saying that the
CD layout that is currently shown on the
web site is all that will be there. I'm
happy to have more text if there is space
on the CD.
So I see the way forward is that we get
the 10+ people with their videos put it
on the CD then see how much space is left
and then let the 10+ people flesh out
their 'page' on the disk.
I hope this gives a fair answer and hope
that this will not discourage people
from joining the project. I do need
everyone's help and (as you can guess)
have a pretty good idea of how I think
it could/should work, but I am open to
change. Shall we see what everyone else
thinks?
Finally, if you've read this far, well
done! :-)
cheers & keep the videos coming...

Hi again,
Also, I see the CD not only 'selling'
the videos but the whole process.
So someone who want's to design the CD
inlay, and who could create the PDF
files on the CD for the inlay could use
the CD to 'sell' their design ability.
And so on. I see the important thing
is involving as many people as possible.
(so for that reason I don't want to limit
this by increasing the video length and
thus reducing the number of people who
can submit videos.)
fun,
andy
PS: There is still a task to think of all
the areas that still need to be done.
E.g. designing the inlay, talking to
the press, etc, etc.

sorry Andy. i still got to say quality over quanity, also id much rather watch a short all the way through rather than just have 5 minute blasts, the only film bar my own i know on there is eddie's circus of the dammned and thats got to be more than twelve minutes, also reading the last trade web site , that film is 26 Mins ???
Miker many moons ago sent us his showreel, that had tons of stuff on it also all complete, cant think how many minutes it was in total but it was on CD and the quality wasnt that bad, maybe think of different compression ???
sorry if i sound negative but i really dont think cutting everything down is the right way about it, i know theres that argument well if they like 5 minutes theyll want to see more but!!!!! that has to be carefully selected 5 mintues which means going back to the editing stage which i dont think most people would want or have the time to do , also would cerate more work if people did wnat to actually see the whole thing.
also what kind of sounds better a CD full of short films or a CD full of clips from short films
saying about watchting one minute and flipping, well what about watching 5 minutes then feeling hard cheated as there is nothign more.
true, there is safety in numbers but zebras hang around in large groups and they still get eaten by lions

Im happy to edit Circus down to a 5 minute taster, simply because distribution isnt my thing. The more 'bits' that are out there the better as far as Im concerned. I know that not everyone is in that same situation
though. (ie: a re-edit)
I want to go with the original plan this time, but I can see advantages in the other.

the rate things are being submitted at, DVD-R will be affordable when Andy has everyone's videos collected together ...
(not a dig - honest!)
if anyone is holding back submitting cos they are scared of what others may think -- get used to it!!
also I have submitted an older work of mine (1995), my 'two people talking in a room' piece which technically is pretty poor but so what?!!
I think Andy needs to put a closing date on submissions and stick to it.

Hi all,
First, the server seems to up again, so
please everyone look at the CD layout if
you've not already seen it.
Chance, I hear what you are saying. But
I feel it is not possible to go with the
whole video. At 26 minutes, you could
only have 2 people's work on the CD.
This has a good chance that both poeple
will be eaten by the lions. With 10+
the lions will have a problem. Or at
least a few people run away, or in our
case a few CDs get out there. So for
this *first* CD lets stick with what the
original plan was (eddie echos this) then
when this is *finished*, we can think of
making 'quality' CDs if needed.
Miker, you made me laugh. :-) But this
is an important point. Everyone, send me
your videos. Remember, the first 5 mins
of your video fading to black is better
that not making the exposure CD at all.
So even if you feel quality is lost, it
is better to have made the *first* CD.
Please, join in, I can't do it alone.
And thank you all for your time and
effort so far, but let's get it done!
cheers,
andy

ok Andy, ill bite my toungue, but if your going to go for the 10 clips , then the content that accompanies each clip has got to be good and standard, not just people e-mailing bits of infomation. Ive sent you something off group on this,
as mentioned i do want to see this work and i do think its a good idea, i just think theres a lot more work and planning needs to be done on top of the submissions(get them into andy!! you afraid or something!)
